Arthritis in dogs: Five ways to manage pain

Mulberry Lane Pet Wellness - Senior dog on a rug

As pets age, much like people, they’ll require more veterinary medical care and extra love and attention to keep them healthy, active and pain free.

Maintaining your senior pet’s healthcare helps aging pets feel more comfortable for longer — and helps to maintain your connection with them. The better they feel, the more engaged they’ll be with you.

One common issue with senior pets is arthritis and joint pain.

It can reduce your pet’s quality of life by impeding physical activity, impacting their emotional well-being, and reducing engagement with you.

We can address the pain by using various approaches including weight management, nutritional supplements, and anti-inflammatory pain relief, among others.

What you can do to help manage your dog’s arthritis

But there are also some things you can do at home. If you have a dog with arthritis, there are a number of products you can buy to support your dog that may facilitate the lifestyle you and your pet enjoyed prior to arthritic limitations. Here is a list of some helpful products.

1. Shoes

Slippery floors are challenging surfaces for a weak dog. Trying to lift itself up on a hardwood or tile floor can be exhausting. Rubber shoes can support your dog’s mobility on slippery floors by giving your pet more grip and traction on the floor.

2. Handles and special leashes

Some dogs will need help getting up due to their arthritis. There are special handle-harnesses or slings to help you raise the back and front of your pet, which ever end needs support.

3. Raised bowls

If food and water blows are placed on the floor, it can be a challenge for a dog to reach down. Your dog may have difficulty bending their elbows and knees slightly without becoming weak and having to lie on the floor. Raised bowls allow your dog to maintain a stranding position while eating and drinking from the bowls.

4. Orthopaedic bed

It’s particularly important to provide a supportive orthopaedic foam bed for your dog. This special bed provides more comfort and support for their weak and achy joints.

5. Pet Ramp

A ramp to help your dog get in and out of a vehicle can make a big difference for you and your dog. Both of you may find it more comfortable than trying to lift your dog in and out of the car when they’re no longer able to jump. The ramp can also be used on your bed or sofa if your dog spends time with you there.

Pets positively impact our health and well-being. By supporting your pet’s health, they support yours.
